Using the scales
At the Setting Level
The Environment Rating Scales are simple yet rigorous self-improvement tools which can be used by settings as part of their reflective process. They highlight strengths and offer clear and concrete steps for development. The ECERS and other scales can form part of an effective ‘continuous quality improvement cycle’ and help settings to meet their requirements under the EYFS. At the Local Authority Level
The Environment Rating Scales can contribute to Quality Improvement at local authority level, providing a shared tool for settings and those supporting them, to raise quality.
The scales can also be used as an audit tool to provide data at LA level – for example, to target spending, training and support based on quantitative evidence about quality, and to provide evidence of quality improvement over time.
